Seattle Public Schools (SPS) educates around 51,000 students across 92 elementary schools, with an average 16:1 student–teacher ratio and 55–56% minority population, higher than statewide norms.In 2024–25, elementary proficiency reached 56% in math and 67% in reading, notably above Washington’s averages of 41% and 53%.Leading schools like Cascadia Elementary, Stephen Decatur, and Frantz Coe rank in the top 1% statewide with 86–98% proficiency in both subjects.
Despite progress, persistent racial gaps remain: for instance, Black students’ reading proficiency hovers near 29%, well below district averages. SPS is responding with data-driven reforms—new math curriculum, reading-first literacy models, enriched learning for all students (ending the Highly Capable Cohort), and expanded home-school partnership strategies—geared toward equitable, sustained elementary-level growth.
