A Price They Didn't Set
Nepal sits in one of the most fragile landscapes on Earth- young mountains, active glaciers, and steep river valleys that have always been prone to sudden, dramatic change.
That fragility has accelerated sharply in recent decades. Himalayan ice loss has doubled since 2000, from roughly 25 cm of glacier melt a year to nearly 50 cm, as regional temperatures have climbed about 1°C above levels from a century ago.
The downstream effect: Nepal's glacial lakes have grown from 606 in 1977 to over 1,540 today, a 150%+ expansion, as meltwater collects behind aging, natural dams. Glacial Lake Outburst Floods, once rare events occurring once or twice a century, are now striking every 3 to 10 years.
Nepal didn't create these conditions. It simply exists within them- a small nation absorbing the impact of forces far larger than itself. That's not a reason for guilt. It's a reason to act.
This isn't a story about blame. It's a story about balance — about a planet where those who've done the least damage often carry the highest cost. Recognizing that imbalance isn't guilt. It's the first step toward doing something about it.
Nepal did not cause the climate crisis. But its people are living with the consequences.
When the Mountains Gave Way
On August 26, a glacial collapse in the high Himalayas sent a wall of ice, rock, and water tearing through the Bhote Koshi river system. Entire settlements vanished in minutes.

- 80 bridges & 40 km of highways destroyed
- 12%+ of Nepal's power generation capacity damaged
- $4–5 billion needed for reconstruction, nearly 10% of Nepal's economy
This is one of the largest humanitarian crises in Nepal's recent history.
What Everest Taught Me
On April 29th, standing at Everest Base Camp, I completed a trek most people wouldn't attempt — navigating Himalayan trails with polio in my left leg.

What stayed with me wasn't the summit. It was the Sherpas and porters who didn't just guide us — they carried us like family, offering warmth and hospitality unlike anywhere else on earth, despite having so little themselves.
"The people who live so gently on this earth are the ones paying the price for a crisis they didn't create. Having received so much from their hands, I feel a moral obligation to stand with them now. When people who've given you everything need help, you don't look away."
