The high school education system in Maryland is known for providing students with the skills necessary to succeed in college, as well as for producing students with high-performing metrics. More than 400 public and private high schools are located in Maryland, serving approximately 273,000 students. For the 2025-2026 academic year, approximately 43% of the high schools in Maryland were rated as 4 or 5-star institutions (Jonathan Landau, 2009). In 2008-2009, MD had an overall high school graduation rate of 86.4%; however, the 5-year graduation rate for students who were underrepresented in the graduating class increased significantly during this same time period. Examples of this include East and Poolesville Technical High Schools. The best high schools in Maryland are rigorous and offer all students the opportunity for success.
