Maryland is considered one of the leading states for middle school quality, with several of Maryland best middle schools situated in northern Maryland. Of all the schools evaluated in 2024–2025, 43% received either 4-star or 5-star ratings due to the effective implementation of academic standards. The percentage statewide for proficiency in English Language Arts (ELA) and math was 48.4% and 24.1%, respectively, which represents an increase from the previous year proficiency rates. The state commitment to continue supporting schools through ongoing investment, competitive salary packages for teachers, and implementation of equity programs supports the success of Maryland schools. Furthermore, based on Baltimore improved performance, Maryland moved up to number 21 among all states on the 2025 NAEP test for eighth-grade reading, indicating continued improvement in academic performance.
