Alabama's elementary education environment is on the rise, led by very strong academic progress and some of the highest performing schools for elementary students in Alabama. Alabama serves almost 340,000 elementary students in just over 1,400 public elementary schools. The average student-teacher ratio is almost 17:1. Alabama's 4th graders recently achieved the state's highest score ever (236) for math from the nation's assessment. Districts like Auburn City, Vestavia Hills, and Madison City consistently have schools that perform exceptionally well. Alabama is also known nationally for its First Class Pre-K program and extending literacy and math initiatives for early learners.
