Maryland is considered one of the leading states for middle school quality, with several of the best middle schools situated in northern Maryland. Especially, Baltimore, Montgomery, and Howard Counties remain academic powerhouses of the state. Among all the schools evaluated in 2025, 43% received either 4-star or 5-star ratings due to the effective implementation of academic standards. The percentage statewide for proficiency in English Language Arts (ELA) holds 48.4%, while the percentage for math holds 24.1%, respectively. The state is committed to continue supporting schools through ongoing investment, competitive salary packages for teachers, and implementation of equity programs that support the success of Maryland schools.
