Altoona, Pennsylvania, has a good base for elementary education with the Altoona Area School District (AASD), which oversees six elementary schools, including Baker, Logan, and Juniata Elementary Schools. While recent proficiency rates in reading and math—48% and 39% respectively- the district demonstrated overall growth with academic gains for all student groups in 2022-2023. Feedback from the community indicates that teachers are dedicated to the students, programs are meaningful, and events like student art shows are fun to attend. For example, Baker Elementary had an above-average rating, indicating quality instruction. With supporting programs for all children, including students who are culturally diverse, and with academic growth continuing, Altoona has built a very nurturing environment and some of the best elementary schools that the city has to offer.
