Allentown School District educates approximately 16,510 K–12 students across 14 elementary schools, with a student–teacher ratio of about 15.7:1 and 90% minority enrollment—primarily Hispanic—and 67% economically disadvantaged. Lehigh Parkway Elementary earned a top state ranking in 2025, surpassing in Math, Science, and ELA. However, several schools lag: Central Elementary shows just 7% math and 12% reading proficiency, and Muhlenberg rates around 23% math and 34% reading. To bridge these gaps, the district is launching theme-based schools—like the new Sonia Sotomayor Dual-Language Academy—and opening a STREAM-focused Central Elementary, offering enhanced instruction in STEM, arts, and bilingual literacy. These initiatives aim to boost academic engagement, uplift underperforming schools, and foster equitable learning across the city. Allentown also has some of the best high schools in Pennsylvania.
