San Jose, California, is a tech-driven city with a population of over a million. It is right in the middle of Silicon Valley. People say it is a great place to live because it is diverse, has many new ideas, and is expensive. The San José Unified School District (SJUSD) has about 30,000 students, and more than 85% of them finish high school. On the other hand, reading and math skills vary a lot from school to school, usually between 40% and 65%. There are gaps because some communities do not get enough help. The district aims to teach children in two languages, prepare them for college, and ensure equitable treatment for all. In San Jose, there are also charter and magnet schools that are excellent at the arts and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). Steve Wozniak and Neal Mohan, the CEO of YouTube, are both from this area.
