    History

The KHSD has a long story of its past in Kern County. In the 1892 General Election, residents voted to start the county’s first high school. On January 12, 1893, Kern County High School opened, later renamed Bakersfield High School in 1945.

Classes started with 32 students in two rooms on the second floor of a building at Truxtun Avenue and L Street. The first graduation was two years later with three students. Today, over 200,000 students have graduated from KHSD.
