Because of its commitment to preparing students for college, the school is known as one of the best. It has a strong Advanced Placement® program with a 48% participation rate. The student body is diverse, with 96% of students being minorities and 74% of students being economically disadvantaged. Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School's students are 8% proficient in reading and 5% proficient in math. The school helps students succeed by setting up important tests like the SAT and ACT to help them get into college. Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School is making its students more ready for careers by adding more Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways, especially in healthcare and information technology. The school just started a new mentorship program that pairs upperclassmen with professionals in the area to help them learn about and prepare for life after high school. In addition, the campus community is benefiting from a series of improvements to facilities that will make student lounges more collaborative and improve digital resources for classroom instruction.
