Lt. Col. Horrace Meek Hickam Elementary School was recently recognized with the Purple Star NORBERT Hawaii Award. The honor highlights the school’s strong commitment to supporting military-connected students and families. Staff and community partners continue to prioritize resources and programs for these students.
Q1. How does Hickam Elementary help students learn about the routines of a community with a military connection?
Ans. Teachers discuss rules like being on time, being polite, and making smooth transitions that are similar to the structured environment that many families are used to.
Q2. How does the school help students learn how to manage their time better during class?
Ans. Students learn how long tasks should take and when to switch by using visual timers and cues from their teachers.
Q3. What routines do students use to become ready for days when there is a substitute teacher?
Ans. Classrooms go over the rules and responsibilities of students so that routines stay the same even when the teacher changes.
Q4. How does Hickam Elementary help students learn how to be respectful when using flags?
Ans. Students learn how to behave properly during flag-related activities or announcements, such as standing still and showing respect.
Q5. How does the school help students learn how to move safely during emergency drills?
Ans. Teachers practice walking routes, listening for directions, and staying with their assigned groups to ensure everyone stays calm.
