It is one of 21 high schools in the Anchorage School District and has about 1,800 students from a wide range of backgrounds. The student-to-teacher ratio is 19:1. The school is known as one of the best because of its International Baccalaureate program and Advanced Placement® classes. 18% of students take AP® classes. 66% of the students are minorities, and 35% of them are from families with low incomes. West High School is improving its well-known International Baccalaureate (IB) program by adding new group projects that focus on global citizenship and advanced research. The campus is excited about the May 12, 2026, graduation at the Alaska Airlines Center. It will be a big deal for the graduating class. The school's performing arts department has also added new technical theater electives, which give students hands-on experience with modern stagecraft and production management.
