How To Clean A Copper Water Bottle

Are you concerned that the metallic luster on your copper bottle is fading and tarnishing? If so, you’ve come to the right spot. In this post, we’ll go through the best cleaning techniques for copper bottles so they can regain their luster with ease.

As we continue with the blog, we’ll talk about the best natural and artificial cleaning methods, and causes of copper tarnishing.

Natural Ways of Copper Bottle Cleaning

The following are a few techniques for cleaning copper with natural ingredients:

    1) Using Ketchup

Due to Ketchup’s acidic nature, it reacts with copper quickly, making it useful for cleaning copper that is only weakly tarnished. After waiting a while, cover the copper object with ketchup and rub it until the tarnish disappears.

Copper is eventually cleaned with warm water and soap and dried with a cloth.

    2) Using Sauce Worcestershire

Worcestershire also has some acidic characteristics that can eliminate the copper tarnish, similar to the acidic quality of ketchup. Apply Worcestershire to the copper’s surface, then gently wipe it off with a dry cloth after a short while. Finally, wash and clean the copper with warm water and soap.

    3) Using Lemon Juice

    a) Lemon Juice with Baking Soda

Take a bowl and mix several spoons of lemon juice with 1-2 spoons of baking soda and apply it to the affected part of the copper and then polish or clean it with a soft cloth after washing through warm water.

    b) Lemon Juice with Tartar Cream

This method is only used when there are hard stains on the copper bottle. Create a thick paste of tartar cream mixed with lemon juice and apply it on the affected area of the copper bottle and leave it for 5 mins.

Then wash the bottle with the common soap and leave it for drying.

    c) Salt and Lemon

This technique is very simple. Just mix half of the lemon with common salt and apply it to the affected area. This is a simple and effective technique and helps to get rid of the hard tarnish.

The copper bottle is washed with soap and dried with a towel after applying the mixture paste.

    4) Copper Cleaning Products that are Available in the Market-

There are numerous chemicals available in the market from various brands that Can be used for cleaning copper bottles. Here is a list of a few ones:

Accuclean NF, Circutek ME-515, Prepbond, Posiclean, Layer Clean NP

Benefits of Drinking Water From Copper Water Bottle

Copper is now popularly replacing plastic as a substitute for making copper water bottle. Several studies now reveal that drinking water in a copper bottle is beneficial for health due to its antioxidant & Microbial properties.

Due to the traces of copper that can contaminate water, some studies have also hypothesized that drinking water kept in a copper container may have health benefits.

The body needs copper, an important trace mineral, in order to function properly. It contributes to the production of collagen, iron absorption, and immune system performance.

    What Causes Copper Tarnishing

Being a reactive metal, copper over time reacts with ambient oxygen to generate a layer of copper oxide that is often black or brown in color and is responsible for copper’s tarnishing and loss of luster.

As a result of this organic process, copper may eventually acquire a protective layer known as a patina that may be colored aqua-green or blue.

Because it increases the value of copper craftsmanship and shields the copper from the elements, the patina, an indication of age, is highly coveted.

    1) Oxygen Availability

One of the most important factors that affect copper tarnishing is the presence of oxygen. The ability to produce copper oxide is reduced over a longer period of time in the presence of dry air.

    2) Moisture Content

The amount of moisture present encourages oxidation, which raises copper’s reactivity and causes corrosion and patina. That’s why it is advised to dry clean the copper product with a dry cloth rather than drying it up in the air.

    3) Human interaction

One of the easiest ways for copper to tarnish is due to the oils found on our skin. Using copper objects is unavoidable(Jewelry, Utensils), so cleaning needs to be done more frequently.

    4) Dead Skin Cells & Dust Particles

Dead skin cells consist of dust particles that may have some compounds that increase the rate of copper tarnishing.

    5) Acidic Instability

Due to the reacting properties of copper, it has the ability to tarnish & corrodes when it comes in contact with acidic substances. Hence, it is preferred not to store milk, wine, or vinegar in copper utensils.

    6) Chemical & Heat sensitive

Copper has a tendency to receptiveness to heat & some cleaning chemical substances which can tarnish the quality of copper. That’s why one must keep in mind to wash copper utensils using copper-safe cleaning methods instead of using chemical cleaners.

Moonpreneur alumna, Sania Jain, had designed theme-based copper bottles to lure children into healthier lifestyles. Apart from providing health benefits, the themes on the bottles create awareness about our ecosystem and why we should adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle.

These bottles can be carried easily by your child in the bag’s side pockets to school or during their travel or picnics.
