1. Lick Observatory
You can start your observatory hopping with Lick Observatory, an astronomical observatory named after American business tycoon and philanthropist James Lick.
Described as the first major mountaintop observatory in the United States and the world’s first permanently occupied mountaintop observatory, it was built in 1888 on the summit of Mount Hamilton, in the Diablo Range just east of San Jose, California.
Spend your weekend in and around the visitor center at the observatory that houses astronomical research, science, and technology.
You can also get a view of the second-largest refractor telescope in the world among other things preserved in the center. Most interestingly, it runs COSMOS, a residential summer science program for high school students at UC Irvine, Davis, San Diego, and Santa Cruz campuses.

2. Montgomery Hill Observatory
A perfect outing for those with an appetite for astronomy. A go-to place for astronomy fanatics, you can spend hours stargazing at the Montgomery Hill Observatory.
It offers free astronomy talks, stargazing nights, astronomy workshops, and monthly field trips to the public. Indeed a delight for the ones fascinated by celestial objects, space, etc.
3. Foothill Observatory
Another magical place that houses wonders of space and offers a first-hand exploration of the wonders of the universe. It is open to visitors on Fridays and Saturdays for solar observation from 10 AM until noon.

4. NASA’s Ames Research Center
This one is away but not far away from San Jose. You can mix both a road trip and a visit to the center. One of the richest conservatories, it’s like a Pandora’s box for first-time visitors.
You can see spacecraft and genuine spacesuits from as early as the Mercury and Gemini missions to artifacts related to NASA’s upcoming Artemis missions. According to their website, the NASA Ames Visitor Center has preserved 80 years of Ames history. Not just that, you can look into current and future projects.
5. Winchester Mystery House
This one differs from the rest. A historic landmark in San Jose, it is an architectural wonder surrounded by mysteries. According to the records, the mansion was once the personal residence of Sarah Winchester, the widow of firearms magnate William Wirt Winchester, and was thrown open for public tours in 1923.
The sprawling mansion has 160 bedrooms, 40 staircases, 13 bathrooms, and 47 fireplaces and the story is that Sarah built the home to confuse and trap evil spirits that haunted her, reports Insider. It guarantees a chill-up to your spine experience.
