Hawaii middle schools, in 2025, stand out because of their recovery of education after COVID-19 and the way they utilize a holistic approach to learning. In early 2021, Hawaii ranks as one of the best states in the country for overall recovery of reading and math after the COVID-19 pandemic; Hawaii has increased its English Language Arts proficiency above where it was prior to 2019, the year when the pandemic began. In total, Hawaii has 295 public schools (including some charter schools), and Hawaiian Language Immersion Schools that offer this program on six different islands.
