The United States is ranked second most technologically advanced country. But do you know what percentage of girls pursue STEM in college?
According to Girls Who Code, just 0.4% of female high school students pursue STEM in college, despite the fact that 74% of middle school girls expressed interest in STEM and careers.
And do you know only 23% of American employees are females in STEM professions, despite the country being one of the epicenters of the technological revolution?
Unbelievable! But it is a fact.
In Europe, the situation is not much better; women make up only 19.1% of the information and communication technology (ICT) sector.
World Bank estimates that women make up less than a third of the workforce worldwide in occupations related to technology. Women have 15.9% of all employment in the engineering and architectural industries, compared to 28% of all computer and mathematics occupations.
Additionally, there is a 14% disparity in wages. Women in STEM fields make $0.86 for every dollar earned by a man, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.
These uninspiring findings notwithstanding, initiatives are being made to support women in technology. Scholarship is a real step in that direction.
