Downtown Elementary Magnet Academy (DEMA) in Columbus, Georgia has an enrollment of 347 Pre-K - 5th grade students and approximately 26 full-time classroom teachers, which results in a student-teacher ratio of about 13:1. State test data show approximately 30-33% math proficiency and 35-37% reading proficiency, and the school's magnet engineering focus emphasizes hands-on learning in STEM fields, making it one of the best elementary schools in Georgia. While the school's demographic makeup is primarily Black (about 75%), there is a fair number of Hispanic and Multiracial students, and approximately 95% of the student body qualifies for free or reduced-price meals, but demonstrates a great deal of economic need. The staff includes certified classroom teachers in every class, a school counselor. The median value of homes in the nearby neighborhoods ranges from about $220 to $260K.

Although we don’t have assemblies, Mathews Elementary conducts multicultural events, projects, and lessons that celebrate the diversity of our school community.

Field days, family nights, and seasonal celebrations create a sense of community.
5. What technology resources are accessible and being used in the classroom?
Students have access to tablets, smart boards and use education apps daily.
