Story

Congratulations to Viaan for designing “Squirepel”
&
being part of the upcoming

MoonBattle Conference 2024 in Milpitas, Silicon Valley

A couple years ago, my mom, and my grandma helped me plant a peach tree in our backyard. We nurtured the tree for 2 years, and eventually, last summer, we saw the fruits of our effort.

I was super excited and we decided to pluck the peaches over a weekend, only to find that almost all our peaches were eaten up by squirrels.

I have been sad, and a bit mad at those squirrels, ever since. Of course, I don’t want to hurt the squirrels, but at the same time, I don’t want them eating away all my peaches. I would be happy to share a few with them, but not all 🙂

Tools Used

I am going to use Ultrasonic Sensor, Arduino Board, ELB (Embedded Learner Board) and buzzer

Working demonstration

Since squirrels get easily scared by loud noises, my idea is to create a device that uses the Ultrasonic Sensor to identify when Squirrels are around, and then make a loud noise to scare them away.

  1. Use the Ultrasonic Sensor to identify when squirrels come near my tree using SONAR. The sensor will be configured to send and receive sound signals for a specific distance (ex: 10 ft from my tree) constantly. If the sound signals come back in less than 10 ft, it would mean a squirrel is near my tree.
  2. Using the Arduino Board, and the Arduino IDE, I will need to configure the Sensor, and the program it for the detection of squirrels. I will use IF statements to achieve this.
  3. I will use an ELB (Embedded Learner Board), to make the loud noise that scares Squirrels away, whenever my sensor detects them. It means the ELB needs to sound it’s buzzer IF the Ultrasonic Sensor detects motion.
  4. I will use a 9V adapter to power the device from a electric outlet and leave it in my back/front yard.

Story

  • To save the fruits on trees from squirrels.
  • To demonstrate how simple DIY projects can be used to solve real life problems.
