West Des Moines, Iowa, is a growing and thriving suburban city in the Des Moines metro area. It has about 74,800 people living there. The city is known for being family-friendly, having a moderately wealthy lifestyle, a strong sense of community, and great public services. The West Des Moines Community School District (WDMCS) runs about 13 schools, including eight elementary schools, and is in charge of the area's public elementary schools. WDMCS public schools do better than the state average in math (about 72%) and reading (about 74%). The district is also known for its diversity (about 45% of students are minorities) and has special programs for English learners, dual-language learners, and gifted students. There are also private schools, like St. Francis of Assisi School, which serves grades PK–8.
