Students returned to Alonzo De Leon Middle School in McAllen for the 2025–2026 school year as the campus opened the semester with a handful of welcome-back activities during the first weeks of classes. The school was also the venue for a regional chess tournament attended by elementary players from several nearby schools. For many of those students, the matches served as practice ahead of national chess competitions scheduled later in the season.
