Hemmenway Elementary School in Katy launched a targeted reading improvement initiative for the 2024–25 school year, building on its 54% reading proficiency rate — above the Texas state average of 51% despite serving a student body where 82% are economically disadvantaged. The school serves 1,151 PK–5 students within Cypress-Fairbanks ISD with dual school counselors and a Gifted and Talented program. For a high-need campus in the Eagle Ranch corridor of Katy, the reading progress initiative reflects a school actively investing in academic improvement for its high-need student community.
