Being Updated
The new classrooms at Sherman Elementary are full of books and other materials that help the school reach its goal of having all of its students read at grade level. The school recently had a successful event to thank its community partners, which included businesses and volunteers who help with its weekend meal and school supply programs.
Q1. Are there any special programs at Sherman El for students who want to learn about Houston's history?
Ans. The "Heritage Project" lets students talk to older people in the area and make digital stories about how the Near Northside neighborhood has changed over time.
Q2. What does Sherman El do to help fifth graders who are moving into the local middle school programs?
Ans. Students can meet their future teachers and counselors at our "Middle School Transition Fair," where they can also tour the next campus.
Q3. Are there any "Dads on Campus" programs at Sherman El to get more men to be role models in the classroom?
Ans. We want dads to join our "Sherman Heroes" group, which helps with morning car lines and projects to make the campus look better.
Q4. Is there a "Family Resource Center" at Sherman El where parents can use computers or get help from the community?
Ans. Yes, our center gives parents free access to the internet and helps them apply for district programs or local community resources.
Q5. What kinds of physical education activities does Sherman El offer besides the usual team sports like basketball?
Ans. To help students develop a lifelong love of physical activity, our PE coach teaches them yoga, dance, and even basic gymnastics.
