Being Updated
Shearn Elementary is doing a great job of promoting global citizenship with its "Cultural Heritage Fair," where families and staff work together to celebrate the different backgrounds of the students. The school is also setting up new digital feedback systems that let teachers tell parents right away how their kids are doing in school.
Q1. Are there any after-school world language clubs at Shearn El, like Mandarin or French, for students who want to join?
Ans. We now have a "International Language Club" where kids can learn some basic phrases from around the world in a fun way.
Q2. What does Shearn El do to keep students healthy during outdoor recess in the hot summer months in Houston?
Ans. On days when it's very hot outside, recess is moved to our air-conditioned gym, where students play structured indoor games and do stretches.
Q3. Are there any special programs at Shearn El that teach students about environmental problems around the world?
Ans. Our "Green Team" teaches students about the importance of protecting ecosystems around the world and leads the campus in efforts to save water.
Q4. Does Shearn El have a "Community Garden" where kids can learn about biology and how to grow food in a way that doesn't harm the environment?
Ans. Students help plant and harvest seasonal vegetables in our campus garden. We then use these vegetables for hands-on science and nutrition lessons.
Q5. How can parents come to Shearn El during the day to watch a lesson in the classroom?
Ans. Parents need to make an appointment 24 hours in advance and show a valid ID at the front desk.
Note: Schedules may change during school holidays. Please contact School for exact Schedule.
