Emile Elementary marked another milestone in 2025-26 as one of BISD's most historically rooted campuses, now more than 130 years after it first opened its doors in 1892. The Child Development Center on campus continued to provide childcare for BISD staff and teen parents throughout the school year. BISD's Child Nutrition Department received a Farm to School grant from the Texas Department of Agriculture in early 2026, a program that benefits Emile's student community, given its Title I designation and high share of economically disadvantaged students.

FAQ

Q1. Why is the school called Emile Elementary?

Ans. Emile Elementary School takes its name from a book by French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, titled "Emile." It's believed the school received its name from Professor Buchanan, one of its earliest principals, who came from Tennessee in the late 1800s and was known for his background in philosophical literature.

Q2. What is the Child Development Center at Emile Elementary?

Ans. Emile Elementary is home to one of three BISD Child Development Centers. The center provides childcare for district employees and teen parents, making it a practical resource for BISD families with younger children who need supervised care during the school day. It's housed on campus and is separate from the standard elementary program.

Q3. Does Emile Elementary offer a GATE program?

Ans. Emile Elementary does run a Gifted and Talented program through Bastrop ISD. The school's 14:1 student-teacher ratio makes it one of the smaller-class environments in the district, which tends to work in favor of students who need more individualized attention, whether they're in GT services or standard instruction.

Q4. What bilingual resources does Emile Elementary offer?

Ans. About 28% of Emile Elementary's students are English Language Learners, and 27% are enrolled in bilingual coursework.

Q5. What is the feeder pattern after Emile Elementary?

Ans. Emile Elementary students typically continue to Bastrop Middle School, which is about 1.9 miles from campus, and then on to Bastrop High School. The connection is direct and short, keeping students in the same downtown Bastrop community through high school.
