Bluefield, which is at the foot of East River Mountain, is home to about 9,500 people and is known as "Nature Air-Conditioned City." The city has a unique mix of Appalachian culture and a close-knit community. There are many public and private schools in the area that focus on community service and learning that includes everyone. High schools in the area are known for having great extracurricular activities, and the number of students graduating and enrolling in career-tech programs has gone up a lot. Families like Bluefield because it is cheap to live there, there are lots of outdoor activities to do, and the schools focus on helping each student grow as a person and learn about their local history, which is great for kids.
