Butte is a historic mining town with about 35,000 people. It is known for its "Richest Hill on Earth" history and strong, close-knit culture. There is a lot of pride in the community in the high school system, which includes both a large public high school and private parochial schools. There is a strong focus on engineering and technical sciences, which is influenced by the local technical university. This helps students do better in school. The city schools have a lot of extracurricular activities, especially in sports and vocational clubs, which helps students develop a "work-hard" attitude. People have praised Butte schools for their involvement in the community and their work to preserve history.
