With about 1,200 to 1,400 students, the school is one of the bigger high schools in the district. Class sizes are about the same as those in most urban public schools, and the student-teacher ratio is good for regular teaching and student services. The school has a full academic program that includes core subjects, elective courses, and extracurricular activities that help students get ready for graduation and college. Springfield Central High has a very diverse student body, with a large number of minority students that reflects the city's population. Math proficiency is about 15% and reading proficiency is about 32%. Funding per student is in line with the district averages for Springfield Public Schools and helps with teaching, academic interventions, and services for students. The SAT is not a regular part of the curriculum at Springfield Central High, but students can choose to take it on their own.

Two former and current Springfield Central athletes are making news: a recent graduate quarterback transferred to play at UMass Amherst, and earlier this winter, two senior players signed with college football programs on Early Signing Day. This shows how well the Golden Eagles are doing on the field and makes the school proud.
