It offers a full public education for students in grades 9 through 12. With an enrollment of approximately 800 students and a student-to-teacher ratio of 14:1, the school is among the leading schools for fostering community-based learning and resilience. Students have the opportunity to engage in Advanced Placement® coursework, maintaining a 27% participation rate, and it is one of the best high school in Hawaii. The student body is made up of people from many different cultures. 91% of the students are from a minority group, and 51% of the students are considered to be economically disadvantaged. The data on academic proficiency shows that 67% of students are good at reading and 28% are good at math. The school helps students take the SAT and ACT exams to help them reach their goals after high school. Kailua High School is one of the best schools on the Windward side. It has a dedicated staff and is known for preparing students for a wide range of career and college paths. The average cost per student is about $18,400.

Kailua High School was recently named a "Hawaii School of Democracy," a high honor that recognizes its work to improve civics education and get people involved in their communities. Jill LaBoy was the new principal of the school for the 2025–2026 school year. It also started a special summer training program to certify seniors as Nurse Aides, which gave them a direct path into the healthcare field. The school is also working to improve the health of the community by offering new programs for students and their families.
