Being Updated
Judith Zaffirini Elementary School continues to honor the legacy of its namesake, Texas State Senator Judith Zaffirini, who has represented Laredo since 1987 and remains one of the most influential voices on Texas education funding in the state legislature. The school's experienced staff, averaging 18 years at the campus, provides a level of instructional consistency that benefits families who stay in the same attendance zone across multiple children. In 2025-26, UISD's TIA initiative recognized teachers district-wide, and Zaffirini's long-tenured faculty were positioned well within that recognition framework.
Q1. Who is Judith Zaffirini, and why is the school named after her?
Ans. The Judith Zaffirini Elementary School was established to honor its namesake, Texas State Senator Judith Zaffirini. Senator Zaffirini has represented Laredo and the surrounding area in the Texas Senate since 1987, and is both a pioneer for the first Hispanic woman ever elected to that position, as well as an ongoing advocate for increased funding to public schools throughout Texas.
Q2. Does Zaffirini Elementary have a GATE program?
Ans. Yes, Judith Zaffirini Elementary School offers a Gifted and Talented Education program through United ISD. Families interested in the referral and assessment process should contact the school at (956) 473-2900 to find out when the evaluation cycle opens each school year.
Q3. What is notable about the teaching staff at Zaffirini Elementary?
Ans. Judith Zaffirini Elementary School's 35 teachers have been at the campus for an average of 18 years, with 19 years of total teaching experience on average.
Q4. What bilingual programs are available at Zaffirini Elementary?
Ans. Judith Zaffirini Elementary School has 53% of students enrolled in bilingual or English Language Development programs. Given that 99% of the student body is Hispanic, ELD instruction runs throughout the school day as a core component of how academics are delivered across all grade levels, not as an add-on service.
Q5. What is the feeder pattern for Zaffirini Elementary students?
Ans. Judith Zaffirini Elementary School students typically continue to Raul Perales Middle School, located about 1.6 miles from campus, and then on to United South High School. Both are within the same United ISD corridor serving south Laredo, keeping students in a familiar district community through graduation.
