Don Jose Gallego Elementary School began the 2024-25 school year with a new principal, Amber Almanza, appointed by the LISD Board of Trustees in June 2024. In her first months, Almanza has drawn on her background in ELA instruction and educational leadership to refocus the campus. The school participated in LISD's 2024 "Pura Vida Awards" promotion, and teachers at Gallego have had 7 classroom projects funded on DonorsChoose since the program launched at the school. The school's March 2026 PROWL Superstars recognition continued the campus's focus on character development alongside academics.
