Helms Elementary is still the best Spanish Dual Language Magnet because every classroom teaches both languages and cultural understanding. Recently, the campus held a successful community "Mercado" where students used art and business to improve their language skills. Leadership is still looking for new ways to teach that will help students get ready for a future that is more global.
Q1. What makes Helms El a unique campus within the Houston Independent School District?
Ans. Helms El is the only full Spanish immersion elementary school in the entire district, using an 80/20 dual language model.
Q2. Does Helms El partner with any international organizations for its language programs?
Ans. Helms El partners with the International Spanish Academy (ISA) and hosts a Spanish Language Assistant to enrich student linguistics.
Q3. How is instruction divided between English and Spanish in higher grades at Helms El?
Ans. By fifth grade, Helms El instruction is a 50/50 mix, with subjects like Science and Math taught in English.
Q4. What kind of after-school enrichment activities are offered at Helms El?
Ans. The Helms El PTA partners with vendors to offer free activities including music, movement, and themed learning centers.
Q5. Are the teachers at Helms El required to have specific certifications?
Ans. Every teacher at Helms El holds a bilingual certification to ensure a high-quality, language-rich environment for all learners.
