Last month Kathy Caraway Elementary School hosted a spelling bee on its campus for the first time. Classroom representatives from each grade participated in a school-wide competition that involved other students, teachers, and families coming together for a concentrated academic experience which provides opportunities for students to engage and develop confidence as well as build a sense of community. The school has also implemented additional literacy programming, such as “Weird Book Wednesday,” in order to encourage students to have access to a wide range of reading materials and develop more sustainable reading habits. All of these programs show the school’s commitment to providing an academic environment steeped in rigor yet coupled with creative opportunities for engagement.
