Being Updated
With alternative and open-enrollment learning models becoming more popular throughout Texas, Austin Discovery School has garnered much recognition within Austin’s education community. As families begin to explore more non-traditional forms of education, small independent charter schools are becoming recognized for their specialized experiential learning methods. This increasing interest in alternative education is initiating dialogue between educators and families about personalized education through innovative educational environments using outdoor learning and project-based education. Austin Discovery School has established itself as a leader among a growing number of innovative educational options in Texas.
Q1. Is the classroom at Austin Discovery School set up in the usual way?
Ans. No, the school uses a project-based learning approach, which means that students often work in groups with people of different ages and do activities that let them learn by doing.
Q2. Does the school have a part where students can learn outside?
Ans. Yes, outdoor education is a big part of the curriculum. Students often do activities in nature and learn about the environment.
Q3. How can families get their kids into Austin Discovery School?
Ans. As a public charter school, students usually get in by applying and then going through a lottery if there are more applicants than seats.
Q4. Does the school help students get to and from school?
Ans. There aren't many options for getting around, so families usually make their own arrangements, but there may be some shared or community-based options.
Q5. What sets Austin Discovery School apart from other public schools?
Ans. It is different from more structured, classroom-based public schools because it focuses on social-emotional development, learning outside, and project-based education.
