Pittsburgh Public Schools serve roughly 8,553 elementary students across 23 K–5 schools and 11 K–8 schools during 2024–25. While reading and math recovery lags—students are still about half a grade behind in reading and a full grade behind in math—chronic absenteeism remains high at ~37%, severely impacting learning.?To combat this, district leaders are deploying data-driven reading interventions and hiring literacy coaches, along with partnering with community groups to address attendance issues. Early signs show a 58% improvement in attendance after text reminders and deeper parent outreach. By combining targeted instruction with stronger community support, Pittsburgh is transforming early learning environments into more resilient, equitable, and engaging elementary experiences. Pittsburgh also has some of the best middle schools in Pennsylvania.
