Being Updated
Madison Elementary is part of Norman Public Schools, which has become a center of a larger statewide debate about religion in public schools. Ryan Walters, the State Superintendent of Oklahoma, said that every public school classroom for grades 5–12 should have a King James Bible. He also suggested that biblical lessons start in first grade. This push has met with a lot of opposition, not just in Norman but also among religious scholars, parents, teachers, and students, who say that religious education should be a choice, not a requirement. In response, the Norman Board of Education passed a resolution saying that it would protect the "education, safety, and privacy of all students," no matter what their immigration status or religion is. This shows that the school district is trying to be open to everyone even though they are under political pressure. Madison Elementary is still running its regular programs and trying to get students involved. In general, Madison Elementary is in the news not because of a local event, but because of a statewide ideological battle that could change how religion is taught in public schools.
