Being Updated
Recently, Little Axe Public Schools have been in the news for all the wrong reasons. A video that went viral showed a high school student using racial slurs against a classmate in class over and over again. Parents are outraged by the disturbing event, which reportedly lasted more than 30 seconds. They say that the school's culture allows abuse. Superintendent Jay Thomas made a strong statement on behalf of the school district, saying, "At no time will racism, threats of violence... be tolerated." He also said that disciplinary actions have been taken and that the police are involved. A Little Axe firefighter was taken to the hospital after working to put out a wildfire in Cleveland County, which is a very different story. It's not clear how bad the injuries are, but the event has made people worry about the safety of first responders from the Little Axe area. On a brighter note, the district has started the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) for the 2024–2025 school year. This means that all students in Little Axe schools can now get free breakfast and lunch without any cost or paperwork for their families. The academic profile is also important. Recent data shows that Little Axe Elementary has about 563 students and a student-teacher ratio of about 14:1.
