Starling PK-8 recently opened its LEED Gold Certified building to a community tour that highlighted its geothermal heating and natural daylighting. The school is celebrating the success of its restorative practices initiative, which has greatly enhanced student engagement and built a culture of social justice. Eighth-grade scholars also are making great progress this semester as they earn high school credits in specialty tracks such as technology, orchestra and the visual arts.
Q1. What high school credits can 8th grade students take at Starling PK-8?
Ans. Eighth graders can earn high school credit in band, choir, orchestra, physical education, technology and the visual arts.
Q2. What sustainable and energy-efficient features are present in the school building?
Ans. The facility is LEED Gold Certified with natural daylighting throughout and an energy efficient geothermal heating and cooling system.
Q3. What is unique about the physical layout of Starling PK-8 for an urban school?
Ans. The school includes a three-story academic wing and a large outdoor learning area, where a central gallery and atrium blur the lines between interior and exterior spaces.
Q4. How does the curriculum at Starling PK-8 inspire students to learn and be involved in the community?
Ans. Through inquiry-based engagement and restorative practices, we seek to deepen understanding across subject areas, but also to foster civic engagement and social justice in the Columbus metro area.
Q5. What are the normal hours of operation for students at Starling PK-8?
Ans. The hours of school are from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
