Being Updated
The future of the former Newton D. Baker School site in Cleveland was discussed during a January 2026 community update. Residents were asked at a Jan. 29 meeting how they wanted to move forward with the closed building. The discussion comes after CMSD’s decision to close the campus in 2025 due to the conditions of the buildings and the cost of repairs. It provides the neighborhood an opportunity to weigh in on what to do with the former school property.
Q1. What made Newton D. Baker School special?
Ans. Newton D. Baker School was an arts-centered CMSD school. It gave students the opportunity to experience creativity, performance and academic learning in one public school environment.
Q2. Is Newton D. Baker School still open?
Ans. Newton D. Baker School closed in June 2025 so families now have to look at current Cleveland school placement options through CMSD.
Q3. Why did the Newton D. Baker School close?
Ans. The closure was approved by CMSD due to facility concerns, repair costs, building age and broader district planning associated with school consolidation.
Q.4 What neighborhood was served by Newton D. Baker School?
Ans. Newton D. Baker School was a public arts magnet option for the Kamm’s Corners area and surrounding west-side Cleveland neighborhoods.
Q5. What should former Newton D. Baker School families do at this point?
Ans. Current placement families from Newton D. Baker School can find CMSD enrollment resources, neighboring district schools and school choice options.
