River Woods Elementary School is a public school in Des Moines, Iowa, that teaches kids in grades K–5. The school has about 500 to 510 students and a student-to-teacher ratio of about 11 to 1, which means that classes are usually small. The school has a regular elementary school curriculum, but it also offers extra help with learning English, special education, and reading and writing at an early age. The school's whole-child approach is also shown in the enrichment activities that students can do, like arts, music, and physical education. There are a lot of different kinds of students at River Woods Elementary. About 45% of them are Hispanic, 20% are Black, 18% are Asian, and 12% are White. Almost 80% of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, which shows that there is a lot of economic need in the community. According to publicly available data that matches up with U.S. News, the school's academic performance is below the state average, with only about 52% of students doing well in math and only 38–41% doing well in reading/ELA. The average cost per student is about $15,000, which shows that the school is making a moderate investment in each student. The school is in a culturally rich neighborhood on the southeast side of Des Moines. It is known for being welcoming and getting families involved. River Woods Elementary School is generally good at diversity and support services, but there are still chances to get better at core academic subjects.
