Waiakea High School recently expanded its well-known Academy Model. The National Career Academy Coalition gave all five of its career academies official accreditation status. The school still honors its top teachers. Recently, a math teacher won the Milken Educator Award, and a science teacher won the 2025 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Students are now taking part in the annual "Junior Country Fair," a long-running event on campus that brings the Hilo community together and shows off student leadership and vocational projects.
