The public career and technical education (CTE) program West-MEC – Willow Canyon High School is based at Willow Canyon High School in Surprise, Arizona. The Western Maricopa Education Center (West-MEC) runs it. Most of the students are juniors and seniors from partner districts, such as the Dysart Unified School District. Students go to West-MEC for part of the day and then go back to their home high school. They learn both traditional subjects and skills that will help them in their careers. The program follows industry standards and offers classes in a wide range of subjects, such as health sciences, information technology, engineering, skilled trades, business, and public safety. The student-teacher ratio that was reported is different for each program. This means that both classroom instruction and hands-on learning in labs can happen. About 41% of students are good at math and about 48% are good at reading (ELA). But these academic measures are often only reported through the home high school. Students take Arizona state tests and the SAT or ACT to get ready for college.
