About West Madison Elementary School

West Madison Elementary holds a special place as part of the story of Elementary Schools in Alabama. It was opened in 1936 as the first building constructed under the WPA and quickly became the hub of the community. By 1970, West Madison Elementary had fully integrated and had become known not only for its diversity but for the community it created. In 2021, West Madison Elementary closed its doors as part of a traditional elementary school; however, the story of West Madison will continue. The campus is currently being renovated and repurposed into a Pre-K Center and will once again utilize the 50,000 square foot building orth to can provide for the needs of the changing landscape of education. West Madison Elementary is a story of growth, hope and the adventure that is schools instilling growth alongside the communities they serve. Students, families and alumni had and do have a special bond, one that tells a much longer story of history, growth and pride in being an Elementary School in Alabama.
