Carolina Athletics has selected Margaret B. Pollard Middle School instructional assistant Hubert West as the 2026 Tar Heel Trailblazer Honoree. Coach West’s enduring legacy was publicly recognized during a North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball game at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he made history as the first Black athlete on the UNC Track and Field team. The recognition was for both his historic athletic achievements and his continued work in education and mentoring students.
