North Carolina middle school education offers robust academic growth opportunities in 2025, with plenty of options available for students to receive their education in public, charter, and magnet school systems. Approximately 1,689 middle schools exist throughout the state, which accommodate many students (about 1.35 million kindergarten through 12th graders). The academic performance for students in this area of the country has improved significantly; in the 2023-24 school year, an average of 61.4% of students achieved a level of proficiency in math and a 55.6% level of proficiency in reading from 3rd–8th grades. More than 70.7% of North Carolina middle schools achieved or surpassed the state established growth standards, and the Golden LEAF Schools program was created to promote cutting-edge learning opportunities for students to further enhance their learning experience, making this state a home to some of the best middle schools in North Carolina.
