In 2025, Massachusetts remains the highest-ranked state for public education, as Massachusetts school districts have some of the most outstanding middle schools in the state. Nearly 900,000 public school students attend middle schools throughout the state of Massachusetts, where many middle schools have a very low student-to-teacher ratio (typically around 12 to 1 in top districts) and are seeing tremendous academic growth. According to the NAEP test results, Massachusetts continues to outperform all other states in both 8th-grade mathematics (283) and 8th-grade reading (268). Special features include the implementation of a statewide civics education program, the establishment of advanced early warning systems, and opportunities for students throughout the state to participate in expansive arts programs, which promote a solid academic foundation as well as well-rounded development.
