The school has about 1,000 to 1,100 students and a student-to-teacher ratio of about 16:1, which is typical for large urban high schools in the district. Southwest High School offers a full range of classes, including college-prep classes, career and technical education (CTE) pathways, fine arts, and sports. The school focuses on building basic skills, getting students ready for the workforce, and getting them ready for college through both academic and extracurricular activities. The majority of the students are minorities, which is similar to the demographics of the Macon community. About 2% of students are good at math and about 12% are good at reading (ELA). As a public school, Southwest High School gets money from the state and local governments. The amount of money spent on each student is in line with Bibb County standards. Students also take regular tests and tests to see if they are ready for college, like the SAT.

Jonathan Hurley, a standout multi-sport athlete, recently won the local "Game Changer of the Week" award, which highlights both student leadership and athletic talent.
