With about 1,200 students and a student-teacher ratio of about 16:1, the school is a typical mid-sized secondary campus in the district. Shaw High School has a full academic program that includes core classes, career and technical education pathways, and a few Advanced Placement and honors classes. There are a lot of different kinds of students, with more than 80% of them being Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, or multiracial. Only 11% of students are good at math and 24% are good at reading and English language arts. The estimated amount of money spent on each student is about $12,000, which includes money from both the state and the local government. As part of its efforts to get students ready for college, Shaw High School gives students standard college entrance tests like the SAT. The Raiders boys basketball team from Shaw High School has won a few close games this season, including a 68–66 win over Kendrick High. This has gotten student fans excited and shown that the school is doing well in sports this winter.
