West Side Middle School in Charleston, West Virginia, is in the news because it is taking part in the West Virginia Department of Education's first Community Development School Pilot Project. The goal of this project is to improve the school's academic standing and community involvement by building relationships with local businesses, colleges and universities, and the community. The project's main goal is to help students in all areas of their lives, including their academic and social-emotional needs.

Donors have also helped the school, with 76 people from West Virginia and 57 people from other states giving money to its cause on DonorsChoose. This effort by the community shows how dedicated the school is to giving its students a good education and chances to succeed.
