Waterman Elementary School in Harrisonburg, VA, is the best elementary school. It has 559 students in grades PK-5 and 38 full-time teachers and 1 full-time school counselor. The student-teacher ratio is 15:1. The school has a 35% math proficiency and a 47% reading proficiency, which is a little better than other nearby elementary schools like Keister and Smithland. Pleasant Valley Elementary and other nearby schools have similar academic trends, but they are different in terms of the diversity of their student bodies and the subjects they teach. Skyline Middle School and Harrisonburg High School are the closest high schools. Both have had alumni who have done well in sports and community service. Waterman is too full. In 2025, the district suggested moving about 80 students to Bluestone Elementary to help with the overcrowding.
Q: 1. What do I need to do to transport my child into Waterman?
A: Go to the Harrisonburg City Public Schools registration site and send in proof of residency and immunization.
Q: What will happen if my child is late?
A: They need to go to the office to obtain a tardy slip. If they are late a lot, school staff may follow up with them.
Q: 3 How do I let you know that my child is not there?
A: Call the school attendance line before or on the day of the absence.
Q: 4. Is there a preschool or early childhood program?
A: The district has PreK; ask Waterman if there are any spots available based on your child's eligibility.

A: Through the PTA, helping out in the classroom, going to school events, and meeting with teachers.
